Did You Know?
- Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.
- Absolutely pure gold is so soft that it can be molded with the hands.
- If the chemical Sodium is dropped in water and a match is taken to the mixture, it will immediately and violently ignite. If Sodium is immersed in a pot of kerosene, however, it will not burn at all.
- Fullerene- has 60 carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a soccer ball. These, and another form of carbon - where the atoms are arranged in cylinders (nano-tubes) - feature in nano-technology.
- Chemical reactions occur all the time, including through everyday activities such as cooking. Try adding an acid such as vinegar to a base such as baking soda and see what happens!
- Helium is lighter than the air around us so it floats, that's why it is perfect for the balloons you get at parties.
- The only planet that rotates on its side like a barrel is Uranus. The only planet that spins backwards relative to the others is Venus.
